General Admissions Policy

Brunswick Community College adheres to the "open door" policy as established by the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges. Brunswick Community College will operate under such an "open door" admission policy in order to meet the broad range of educational needs in service to the people of Brunswick County and the surrounding area. The College will admit any high school graduate or GED recipient who is 18 years of age or older who can benefit from further education, provided the person formally applies and completes the admission process. Brunswick Community College will permit admission of students between 16 and 18 years of age provided their needs can best be served by the College. An admission policy of this nature, as it relates to minors with special needs, is in accordance with provisions established by the State Board of Community Colleges as outlined below. An applicant who is a minor between the ages of 16 and 18 years old and is not currently enrolled in the school system may be considered a person with special needs and admitted to an appropriate course(s) or program provided:

  1.

That the minor applicant has left the public school no less than six calendar months prior to the last day of regular registration of the semester in the institution for which admission is sought;

  2.

That the application of such minor is supported by a notarized petition of the minor's parents, legal guardian, or other person or agency having legal custody and control of such minor applicant, which petition certifies the place of residence and date of birth of the minor, the parental or other appropriate legal relationship of the petitioner to the minor applicant, and the date on which the minor applicant left the public schools. However, all or any part of the six-month waiting period may be waived by the superintendent of the public school unit in which the applicant resides;

  3.

That such admission will not preempt College facilities and staff to such an extent as to make the College unable to admit all applicants who have graduated from high school or who are 18 years of age or older. Admission policies and procedures are reviewed annually by the Admissions Committee and are coordinated by the Office of Student Development.
